A total of 23 members of Hyundai Motor India Employees Union (HMIEU), led by their General Secretary, Sridharan, were arrested on Wednesday morning by the police when they attempted to stage a hunger strike at Irrungattukottai.
All of them were released later in the evening. Official sources at HIML said that a final tripartite agreement on this issue of re-instating sacked employees was reached in December 2010 between the HMIL management, Labour Commissioner and HMIEU (a CITU-backed non-recognised union). Stating that the demonstration organised by the non-recognised union was “nothing but violation of the agreement” reached at the tripartite committee meeting, a company spokesperson said that it had honoured the agreement in its entirety. “The matter, thus, stands closed,” according to official sources.”
