Chinese Ambassador Zhang Yan on Thursday met Union Home Secretary G.K. Pillai to clear the air over delay in security-related clearances for products of two Chinese companies operating in the Indian telecom sector.
“We had a very good discussion. It was a positive meeting. I hope all relevant issues will be resolved,” Mr. Zhang said after the 45-minute meeting. Home Ministry sources said they had asked for clarifications from the Chinese side and would process them as soon as these were received.
The Chinese companies' grouse was recently highlighted by Minister Jairam Ramesh, who termed the Home Ministry's approach to withholding clearances to Chinese firms (Huawei and ZTE) “alarmist and paranoid.”
Mr. Pillai also interacted with ZTE officials. “We had a meeting. Talks are going on. We have appealed to the government. We have put forward our thoughts. Let's see,” said a ZTE official.
