CESC, the power utility in the RPG Group, has drawn up plans for increasing its capacity to 7,200 MW at an investment of Rs. 35,000 crore, even as it mounts a renewed bid to enter the renewable energy segment by planning a 90 MW hydel power unit in Arunachal Pradesh. The group may also raise equity for funding this programme. CESC Vice-Chairman Sanjiv Goenka announced on Tuesday CESC's involvement in the 90 MW Jarong hydro electricity project in Arunchal Pradesh saying that the MoU for setting up the run-of -the -river project was signed in late November with the state government. An investment of Rs.630 crore would be required for the project. The Jarong project is expected to achieve financial closure after getting environmental nod and may be commissioned in 2015.
By 2016, CESC plans to have in its product basket, a 500 MW hydro electric capacity and 200 MW solar capacity, alongside expanding its current 1,250 MW thermal capacity to 6,500 MW at a cost of Rs.35,000 crore. “This is proposed to be done with a debt-equity ratio of 75-25.
