BCCL chief ahead in race for CIL chairman's post

The Chairman-cum-Managing director of Bharat Coking Coal Ltd (BCCL), Tapas Kumar Lahiry, is leading in the race for the post of Chairman of Coal India Ltd (CIL), making it the second time in a row that a CMD of BCCL getting shortlisted for the top job. The present Chairman P. S. Bhattacharyya, who is scheduled to retire on February 28, was also from BCCL. Along with Mr. Lahiry, D. C. Garg from Western Coalfields was also shortlisted, it was learnt.

The others who took the interview on November 25 were the CMD of Northern Coalfields and the Director Personnel of CIL R Mohandass from among internal candidates. Of the three candidates from outside the industry, only two, the Director Finance of Nalco and Director (Finance) of NHPC took the interview as the MD of Braithwaite did not appear for the interview.

The names will now be forwarded to the Union Coal Ministry. Rounds at the Central Vigilance Commission, Central Bureau of Investigation would follow before the selected candidates being put up before Sriprakash Jaiswal, Union Coal Minister.
