Atmel sets up R&D centre

Atmel Corporation, a world leader in the design and manufacture of microcontrollers, capacitive touch solutions, advanced logic, mixed-signal, non-volatile memory and radio frequency (RF) components, inaugurated its first R&D office “Atmel R&D India” in Chennai on Friday.

Addressing presspersons here, Vegard Wollan, Vice-President - Microcontroller Business Unit, Atmel Corporation, said the India centre would focus on developing new products as well as supporting and improving the existing products. Located in RMZ Millenia, Perungudi, covering 20,000 sq.ft., this would be one of the largest design centres of Atmel Corporation, he said.

According to Karthik Rau, Director, India Design Centre the R&D office would increase its headcount to 180 by the fourth quarter of 2011 from the present 105. Atmel was also planning to expand its sales in India through a development and growth plan. He said top 10 best smartphones were using ‘maxTouch', the premium touchscreen solution from Atmel.

The entry of the $1.7 billion organisation would help enhance the country's exposure to cutting edge technology in the microcontroller and semiconductor market segments, he said.

Atmel Corporation with 5,600 employees operates in more than 40 countries.
