The Union budget figure for the financial year 2018-19 is about 10% higher than 2017-18, with most sectors witnessing an increase in terms of absolute numbers. For instance, education, which was allocated ₹8.18 lakh crore last year, has been allocated ₹8.5 lakh crore this year -- an increase of almost 4% in absolute terms.
However, if we factor in the percentage share allocated to education this year (3.48% of the total budget), it is lower than last year (3.69% of total budget). This is the case with rural development and defence as well -- while in absolute terms the allocated funds have increased, their share in the budget has fallen.
Meanwhile, certain allocations like food subsidy and transportation have increased in this year’s budget. The visualisations below show the percentage of each sector in the budget.
The treemaps below show the share of each sector in the budget. The size of each box is proportional to the percentage of allocation under each head. All allocation in ₹ crore.
