Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has become the first mobile operator in Gujarat to flag-off 3G Wireless mobile (third generation) and high-speed data (upto 3.6 Mpbs/second) internet services in Rajkot, Satya Pal, Chief General Manager, Gujarat Telecom Circle (Ahmedabad), said on Monday.

Launching the services, Satya Pal told reporters that Rajkot is the third city in the state followed by Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar to introduce 3G Wireless services. The state has over 30 lakh mobile subscribers and BSNL is expecting at least 10 per cent of existing 2G customers to shift to 3G services. Rajkot alone has 2.5 lakh mobile customers.

Considering the huge scope for growth in data revenue, BSNL has invested around Rs 188 crores in upgrading the infrastructure for 3G services in Gujarat, Pal said, adding BSNL obtained a Pan India License for the service. Hence, BSNL subscribers will get seamless connectivity throughout India.

BSNL also introduced new WAP portal, “BSNL Live” through which content like movies, music, mobile TV, video can be accessed, he said.

In a bid to offer next generation telecom services at affordable rates, BSNL also launched Fibre-To-The-Home (FTTH) in Rajkot on Monday. The services were launched in Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar a two weeks ago. After Rajkot, the services would be launched in Surat next week, he added.

BSNL is expecting to cover the entire state by September this year by covering as many as 61 cities of Gujarat.
