BJP on Tuesday expressed concern over the continued devaluation of the Indian rupee, saying such a slide had never happened in the history of the nation.

“Why is the Indian rupee being devalued at 1.5 to 2 per cent per day. There has not been such an unprecedented fall in the value of the rupee...such a fast devaluation ever in the history of the nation,” said BJP leader Yashwant Sinha.

He said from September till date, there has been a devaluation of the Indian Rupee by 12 per cent within a short span of two months.

“It is happening because money is going out of the country. People are buying the dollar and there is pressure on the dollar, which is in short supply,” he said.

Mr. Sinha rejected the government’s plea that the liquidity in foreign countries was affecting the value of the rupee and asked the government as to what steps it was taking to check the downward movement.
