Big jump in mobile app market seen

The report projects that employment in this industry will range between 1.51 lakh and 1.59 lakh by 2016.

The mobile application industry in India is forecast to grow to Rs.1,964 crore by 2016, employing up to 1.59 lakh people, according to a report by IAMAI and ICRIER.

The report titled ‘An Inquiry Into The Impact Of India’s App Economy’ said the industry was pegged at Rs.974 crore in 2014.

The apps industry currently accounts for 75,000 jobs in India.

The report projects that employment in this industry will range between 1.51 lakh and 1.59 lakh by 2016.

“The direct increase in employment attributable to India’s App economy is expected to range between 76,230 and 84,010 jobs from 2014 to 2016. The multiplier effects could result in an increase in employment within the industry by up to 8 times during the period 2014 to 2016,” it said.

Interestingly, the report pointed out that even though smartphone penetration in India was estimated at just 10 per cent of total mobile users, the country experienced 100 million downloads per month, placing it amongst the top five regions for Google Play, the official Android mobile app store.

“Digitisation of data at source is critical, and, therefore, mobile is the way forward as it can speed up the implementation of projects…but the challenge is to create a conducive ecosystem,” R Chandrasekhar, President, Nasscom, said.
