Cardamom auctions, stalled since December 5 by the controversy and unrest over Mullaperiyar dam, will resume on December 27.
The first auction would be held at the Puttady Spices Park, near Idukki, by South India Green Cardamom Company. Only half of the 1.2 lakh kg of cardamom pooled by South India Green Cardamom Company would be put up for sale on the auction.
The decision to resume auctions was taken at the end of a well-attended meeting of all stakeholders, convened by the Spices Board, at the Puttady Spices Park, said Spices Board Vice-Chairman Roy K. Paulose.
Member of Parliament from Idukki P. T. Thomas, who was present at the meeting, said there would be no restrictions in the movement of cardamom between Tamil Nadu and Kerala. He also assured the stakeholders that police protection would be provided for moving cardamom consignments on a regular basis. The 50 tonnes of cardamom sold at auctions and held up in Kerala owing to the unrest would be transported immediately to Tamil Nadu.
