Adani's Chhindawara project may hit roadblock

Environment Ministry not to allow diversion of water from protected areas

The power project of Adani Power Limited (APL) in Madhya Pradesh seems to have run into rough weather with the Environment Ministry giving enough indications that it would not approve the proposal of the company to draw water from Pench Tiger reserve for its project in Chhindawara district.

Although the company is yet to approach the Environment and Forest Ministry for formal clearance, Environment and Forest Minister Jairam Ramesh on Wednesday hinted that his Ministry would at any cost not allow diversion of water from the protected areas for any kind of commercial use.

Deliberation

“We will deliberate in the Ministry over the issue when the matter comes up for consideration at the meeting of the National Board of Wildlife. All aspects of the projects would be taken into consideration, including its impact on the tiger reserve.

The Board will take a final call on this issue but things do look bleak,” he added.

The project pertains to the 1,320 MW coal-based thermal power plant proposed by Adani Power.

This is not the first time that an Adani project has hit a roadblock over green nod.

A few months ago, the Environment Ministry had said no to the company's coal mining proposal in Tadoba region in Maharashtra citing threat to tigers in the adjacent Tadoba Andheri tiger reserve.
