Volkswagen has turned its Amarok workhorse into what it calls a “Power Pick-up” with wide flared arches over new 22-inch wheels and with 410 horsepower under the bonnet.
The limited-edition updated Amarok is roughly similar to one displayed at a recent annual VW enthusiasts’ meet at Lake Woerthersee. It has a V8 diesel engine in place of the smaller V6 which graced the striking concept.
The 4.2-litre V8 sends the VW pick-up bounding from zero to 100 kilometres per hour in six seconds — faster than the updated Scirocco R.
Top speed is give as 240 km/h compared to 180 km/h for the regular version which comes with a 180—horsepower diesel engine. More powerful brakes ensure sufficient stopping power.
The more masculine look continues inside with leather seats and glossy cabin trim which takes cues from the exterior’s colour scheme.
The changes are designed to put the Amarok in the same league as popular stateside Ford pick-ups such as the Ford Raptor.
The V8 diesel is a stock engine from the VW range which has been upgraded by German tuner MTM. Suspension and chassis modifications have been carried out by another German tuning shop, Dirks of Emden.
The ultimate Amarok is available through VW dealers and comes with a hefty surcharge. The changes push up the list price from around 50,000 euros ($67,000) to more than 180,000 euros ($243,000).
