The general downtrend in the economy appears to have no impact on the two-wheeler industry with many manufacturers reporting robust sales numbers for December 2013.
Yamaha Motor Yamaha Motor India reported a 36.88 per cent jump in total two-wheeler sales at 64,997 units in December 2013, as compared to 47,483 units in the same month of the previous year.
Domestic sales grew by 58.32 per cent to 39,777 units from 25,123 units, the company said in a statement.
In the export markets, the company sold 25,220 units last month compared to 22,360 units in December 2012, a growth of 12.79 per cent, it added.
For entire 2013, the company said it clocked total sales of 6,51,487 units compared to 4,86,810 units in 2012, up 33.82 per cent.
Roy Kurian, Vice-President (Sales and Marketing), said: “Despite industry travails, 2013 was an excellent year for us, and we are certainly pleased with our performance this year.”
Apart from new scooter launches, the robust results could be attributed to the company’s strong product portfolio and steadfast customer confidence, he added.
“We’re looking at further expanding our dealership network across India as well as enhance our customer care services. “The future definitely seems exciting, and we look forward to improving our performance in 2014 as well,” Mr. Kurian said.
HMSI Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (HMSI), too, reported a 36.15 per cent growth in sales at 2,96,144 units for December 2013. The company’s total sales stood at 2,17,498 units in the corresponding month previous year.
Motorcycle sales registered a rise of 17.74 per cent to 1,25,109 units in December 2013, up from 1,06,254 units in the same month previous year, HMSI said in a statement. The company also reported an increase of 53.74 per cent in its scooter sales to 1,71,035 units from 1,11,244 units in December 2012, it said.
TVS Motor The Chennai-based TVS Motor Company reported a 2 per cent increase in its total sales at 1,59,459 units in December 2013, as against 1,56,221 units in the same month previous year.
The company said its total two-wheeler sales increased marginally by one per cent at 1,53,358 units in the month from 1,51,735 units in the year ago period.
Domestic two-wheeler sales declined by 1.41 per cent to 1,32,664 units from 1,34,566 units, TVS Motor Co said in a statement.
Motorcycles sales were also down by 4.37 per cent to 57,576 units from 60,210 units, while scooters registered a growth of 37.56 per cent to 41,817 units from 30,398 units in the period under reference, it added.
Total exports during the month grew 27.38 per cent to 25,797 units from 20,251 units in the corresponding period previous year.
Two-wheeler exports also grew by 20.53 per cent to 20,694 units in December 2013 from 17,169 units in the same month of the previous year. In the three-wheeler segment, the company said total sales grew by 36.8 per cent to 6,137 units from 4,486 units.
