Turkey has removed safeguard duty on imports of cotton yarn from India with effect from December 31, the Central Government on Tuesday said.
The safeguard measures by Turkey, a major producer of cotton, were imposed in 2008 for three years, which was later extended for another three years in 2011.
Consultations were held with Turkey in March, 2012, in Ankara wherein inconsistencies in extending the measures through a provisional duty and various other procedural and legal lapses were highlighted, an official statement said. “Following this a memorandum of understanding was signed between India and Turkey wherein it was agreed that Turkey would remove the definitive measure not later than December 31, 2012,” it said. — PTI
