Seven banks have been directed by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) to report to it within seven days on the use of unregistered telemarketers by them for promotion of their business.
Cautioning banks and financial institution, TRAI said such behaviour was in violation of provisions of the Telecom Commercial Communications Customer Preference (Thirteenth Amendment) Regulations, 2010.
Axis Bank, Citi Bank, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Kotak Mahindra, Punjab National Bank and SBI “have been directed to look into the specific cases of breach, initiate corrective action and report back to the authority within seven days, failing which the banks are liable to have all their telecom resources disconnected throughout the country,” TRAI said.
The regulator said despite actions taken by it, it continued to receive a large number of complaints from consumers against banks, insurance companies, builders for making calls/ SMSs organised through unregistered telemarketers.
