Outlining the company’s aim to become a global player, Ranjit Yadav, President of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicle Business Unit on Thursday said the company needs to work on launching products on time and improving sales and service to achieve the goal.

"We are following a four pillar policy to take the company to next level. Firstly intense product focus, then world class quality and manufacturing, third is best in class sales experience and finally best in class service experience," he told The Hindu in an interview.

He added that one of the major challenges for the company has been bringing out compelling passenger vehicle in time.

The company, earlier this week, after nearly four years unveiled two new products -- Zest and Bolt, in the Indian market which will be launched in the second half of the year.

"Beginning of last of year, we spent a lot of time working out a product portfolio… the board has approved it and we are now executing it. One of the challenges for our company has been launching compelling passenger vehicles in time. That is what we are fixing," he added.

Asked about the areas where he thinks the maximum catching up needs to be done, Mr. Yadav said, "We have work to do various things… our journey is to become best in class player globally; it is not just India as a market."

He added, "There is work on the product side. There is opportunity for us to improve in our quality for example. So there is a lot of work going on there. We were not very good in our sales and service experience. We are improving our showrooms, dealers, training people better. So we are working on various levels."

He further said the unveiling of the Bolt and Zest was the beginning of pipeline of new products.

Tata Motors, he said, will come out with an automatic manual transmission variant of its small car Nano "in less than 12 months."

"We have also showcased Nexon, which is our next generation urban utility vehicle, at the Delhi Auto Expo. This will be available in the market in less than 24 months," Mr. Yadav said.

The company that sells models such as Nano, Indica, Indigo, Vista, Sumo and Safari in the passenger vehicle segment is India's largest maker of trucks and buses. However, it has been posting losses in its domestic operations for the last few quarters.
