Tata Motors on Thursday launched its much awaited `Bolt', the all-new hatchback. The Bolt follows the company’s launch of its sedan Zest in August 2014 and is a part of the company’s `Horizonext’ strategy.

The Bolt has been launched at a starting price of Rs 4.65 lakh (ex-showroom Mumbai) for the Revotron (petrol) and starts at Rs 5.75 lakh for the diesel variant. It is offered in 4 trims of XE, XM, XMS and XT with the high-end petrol variant priced at Rs 6.34 lakh (ex-showroom Mumbai) and the Diesel top-end at Rs 7.33 lakh.

Tata Motors said the Bolt is available across 450 company outlets from Thursday.

The petrol variant of the Bolt will be the segment’s first hatchback to be powered by the country’s first 1.2L turbocharged Multi-point fuel injection (MPFi) petrol engine, Revotron 1.2T. The diesel variant has a Quadrajet 1.3L engine.

The company said as per Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) certification, the Revotron 1.2T delivers fuel efficiency of 17.57 km per litre while the diesel variant deliver 22.95 km per litre.

Speaking at the launch, Mayank Pareek, President, Passenger Vehicles Business Unit, Tata Motors, said, ``we expect Bolt to strengthen our presence in the hatchback market, one of the most popular segments for Indian customers.’’

The Bolt was designed and engineered by the company’s design studios across Pune, Coventry in UK and Turin in Italy. ``It is the next leap under our Horizonext strategy and represents the new DNA of our passenger vehicles business,’’ Mr. Pareek said.

Manufactured at the company’s plant in Pimpri, Pune, the Bolt comes with new features. It is the first hatchback to offer the multi-drive functions of `Eco’, `City’, and `Sport’ which come with the petrol variant. It is available in five colours – Venetian Red, Pristine White, Platinum Silver, Sky Grey and Dune Beige.

The Bolt is positioned in a highly competitive segment with models like Maruti Swift, Volkswagen Polo, Hyundai i10, Renault Pulse and Nissan Micra to contend with. ``It is in the compact segment which the largest segment in India accounting for 40 per cent of the total Indian car market,’’ Mr. Pareek said, adding that there were no immediate plans for an automatic transmission (AMT) version of the Bolt. Tata Motors also announced the launch of a new service programme for the car offering warranty of 3 years or 1 lakh km. as well as free 24x7 Roadside Assistance service for 3 years.
