Sub-Rs.10,000 smartphone from HTC

Taiwanese smartphone maker HTC on Monday entered the under-Rs.10,000 phone category with its Desire 210.

“Today, the Desire 210 has been globally launched in India, which is one of the key markets for us,” HTC President for Global sales and CFO Chia-Lin Chang told reporters here.

The Desire 210 will be available in the market from May onwards for Rs.8,700. Besides, the company announced that its flagship device HTC One M8 would start selling at Rs.49,900 in the Indian market from May 8.HTC Desire 816 priced at Rs.23,990 will also be made available around the same time.

The company’s current market share in India is estimated to be around 4-6 per cent, its Country Head Faisal Siddiqui said. With these new launches, the company was targeting to up the share to 10 per cent in the smartphone market, he added. However, he did not put a timeline as to by when the company expects to reach the goal.

About the launch, he said, “Sub-Rs.10,000 phone accounts for about 55-60 per cent of the total market. With our new device we can now cater to this segment. We recently launched the Desire 310 for Rs.11,700 which has received great response.” At this price point, the 4-inch HTC Desire 210 will compete with the likes of popular Nokia Lumia 520 and Samsung Galaxy S Duos, besides various domestic manufacturers who have various offerings in the segment.

Built on Android’s Jelly Bean platform, the dual SIM smartphone Desire 210 has 5 megapixel main camera and a VGA camera on the front.
