The workers' union ended their fifty day work stoppage at the Chakan unit of the Bajaj Auto Ltd. here on Tuesday , but without any of their demands being fulfilled.
The VKKS (Vishwa Kalyan Kamgar Sanghatana), an internal union, has decided to put the ball back in the management’s court, and wait for their decision over the next few weeks, VKSS President Dilip Pawar said.
“Nothing changed over the last 50 days. The situation is exactly how it was when we left the factory. But we have decided to give them another chance,” Mr Pawar told The Hindu on Tuesday.
The union had demanded reinstatement of 22 suspended workers, wage revision, and shares of the company at reduced prices. Although there were several rounds of meetings over the last six weeks between the VKKS and top official of BAL, no satisfactory conclusion was reached.
“More than 900 workers have forgone 50 days of salary. Considering this at least, Bajaj should think of solving matters amicably,” Mr Pawar said.
Announcing the end of the strike, Managing Director Rajiv Bajaj issued a statement saying, “I am very pleased that the union has unconditionally called off their strike at Chakan.”
Pending inquiry
"On behalf of the management, I assure all the 22 workmen who are suspended pending inquiry that their cases will be considered objectively and sympathetically in the collective interest of all stakeholders," Mr. Bajaj added.
