Sony India is looking to restart its manufacturing operations in the country, after nine years of winding down the same, with the company’s entertainment business proving to be the spark.
The Japanese consumer electronics giant will begin manufacturing PlayStation 3 (PS3) games at its Mahape plant in Navi Mumbai where it rolls out game DVDs. While not under consideration at the moment, the company may look to start manufacturing the PS3 video game console at some point in the future.
“We are looking to convert the existing plant into a blue-ray replication one, and also adding a number of new lines to make the games locally. The master stamper will also be imported, making it a total revamp. This will require significant investment, and is a strategic move on our part,” Atrindriya Bose, Country Manager, Sony PlayStation India told this correspondent.
While Mr. Bose did not divulge the exact details of the investment, sources placed it at Rs. 50-60 crore.
