Sharp to drive shift to inverter ACs

Sharp Business Systems (India) Ltd (SBS), Indian arm of Japanese consumer electronics major Sharp Corporation, intends to pioneer the shift to inverter air-conditioners (ACs) in India and chalks out plans to go deeper in the country in the coming months to boost its AC business.

SBS, a recent entrant into the Indian AC market, claims it has garnered a market share of about 44 per cent in the inverter AC category during January-September 2013. It has a market share close to five per cent in overall AC market.

The company makes and sells only AC inverters. From about six models in 2013, it now offers 17 models in the price range between Rs 38,000 and Rs 75,000. “Sharp has the first-mover advantage in inverter AC segment, and we are driving change towards inverter ACs in India,” Sunil K Sinha, Chief Executive Officer – India Region & Managing Director, SBS, said.

Though the initial price of inverter ACs is higher than other star-rated ACs, monthly energy consumption would be much lower and thereby driving reduction in power bills, he said.

Sharp has identified air-conditioners as one of the key growth areas in India.
