The combined printer, copier and multifunctional product (MFP) market in India saw 12.7 per cent decline in the first half of the year 2009, with total sales of about 1.1 million units only, a study said today.

According to research firm Gartner, the MFP market saw about 1.2 million units being shipped in H1 2008.

"The impact of the global recession was clearly visible in the Indian market as consumers and businesses are either delaying or cancelling their decision to buy print devices," Gartner Principal Research Analyst Vishal Tripathi said in a statement. Tripathi said that new sales have also being hit due to the credit crunch and tight budgets.

"However, with the decline in hardware sales, there is increased focus from vendors on their document management software and services capabilities to help businesses reduce and better manage costs," he added.

Hewlett Packard maintained the top spot with a market share of 49.7 per cent, followed by Canon and Epson at 15.7 per cent and 12.7 per cent respectively.

The managed print services could help businesses reduce the cost through product consolidation or redeployment, he said.
