Nokia Siemens Network (NSN) on Saturday announced the closure of its factory in Kolkata. The unit, set up in the late 1980s manufactured fixed line equipment. A total of 48 out of the 65 permanent employees on the rolls, face retrenchment. The rest --have either taken transfers or had accepted the voluntary separation scheme offered by the company.
Decline in demand for fixed line telephony focus on mobile broadband were some the factors that influenced the decision, Satyendra Singh, Head of Manufacturing Operations, India, NSN said.
Official communication to the 48 factory employees was sent on May 31, 2013. The closure takes effect from 31st July. This factory is located in the Salt Lake Electronic Complex.
Mr Singh said that NSN remains committed to West Bengal with current employee strength of around 700 who manage the mobile telecom network and the services business.
