Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday claimed that Siemens was so impressed with the development of the State that it had decided to ‘close down' its operations in China and ‘shift' the same to Gujarat. Inaugurating the company's expanded facility at Vadodara here, Mr. Modi said he was told about the company's ‘decision' to close down the China operations by its Managing Director Armin Bruck, when he was talking to him just before the inaugural ceremony.
Mr. Modi, however, was promptly contradicted by Mr. Bruck himself. Talking to media persons fter Mr. Modi left the venue, Mr. Bruck said Mr. Modi had ‘ misunderstood' him. He said there was no question of Siemens closing down the China facility, which was three times larger than the facility in India. But, he said, it had now decided to keep India on a par with China and new high-tech investments in steam turbine would be made in Gujarat instead of its earlier proposal to invest further in China.
