The Centre has approved a project for the expansion of the Shillong Software Technology Park here to attract more outsourcing and IT companies.

“The Centre has approved a project to add another 15,000 sq ft to software technology park. Nearly 5,000 sq ft will be added this year. It will increase call centre facilities and BPO business,” Commissioner and Secretary (IT) DP Wahlang said at a meeting of IT Task Force.

“Shillong STPI is now fully functional,” he said.

“The State Urban Affairs department has allotted 80 acres of land in New Shillong township to IT department for setting up a DOEACC centre. The Centre has approved Rs 7.9 crore for the project,” he said.

With the government giving thrust on capacity building, Wahlang said IT giant Symantec has been roped in to train youngesters as there would be lots of avenues with the setting up of State Wide Area Network (SWAN).

The government hopes for new investments in the IT sector and has been planning to put fresh public private partnership (PPP) proposals to companies, he said.
