Container ship MV Hammonia Virginia on Tuesday arrived at the L&T Kattupalli International Container Terminal (KICT) from the Chennai Port.
It also marked the commencement of the maiden fortnightly ‘Chennai Express Service’ by one of the world’s biggest shipping companies — Maersk — connecting KICT with Far Eastern countries.
After loading 1,011 twenty-foot equivalent units of containers, including 586 empty boxes, the vessel departed to Visakhapatnam Port.
A KICT official said: “We are thrilled that Maersk has included KICT in its port of call by commencing a regular service after conducting three ad hoc calls in the last two years. It will be a boon not only to automobile and electronic majors, but also to several firms located in and around Chennai and Sriperumbudur as the port provides a congestion free atmosphere.”
