The container traffic volume and Customs revenue contribution of Krishnapatnam Port Container Terminal (KPCT) for 2014-15 has reported a big jump.
Last year, the port handled over 91,000 boxes against 58,577 boxes in the previous year. The huge increase in trade volume also resulted in doubling of Customs revenue from Rs.970 crore to Rs.1,943 crore. For the current year, KPCT proposes to handle around 1.78 lakh containers.
Billed as one of the largest private sector ports, KPCT in the last seven years collectively handled more than 150 million tonnes of cargo. Last year alone, the port handled 41 million tonnes consisting of cement, granite, rice, waste paper and automotive parts. And this year, it would handle 56 million tonnes of cargo.
KPCT Director and CEO, Anil Yendluri, attributed the fastest and highest growth among the major ports to faster trailer turnaround time, uncongested roads, flexible tariff, reduced handling costs and conversion of cargo from bulk to containers.
“To achieve the set target, we are implementing latest technologies for cargo handling and taking up several initiatives to create new cargoes for containerisation,” a top official said.
