Close on the heels of SpiceJet offering 10 lakh cheap tickets for an all-inclusive price of Rs.2,013 to fill up seats, Jet Airways, on Tuesday, announced an offer twice the size by offering 20 lakh domestic economy class tickets in the price range of Rs.2,225-3,800 to attract passengers to fly as well as to fill up a part of its unsold inventory. Indigo is expected to match the offer but a spokesperson for the airline denied any such move.

Both Jet Airways and its budget subsidiary JetKonnect are offering these seats in over 450 daily flights operating to 57 cities in India. This nationwide sale of low fares is for six days starting Tuesday until February 24 mid-night. This economy class one-way fare offer will be available for travel until December 31, 2013, whereas SpiceJet’s offer was for travel up to April 30, 2013.

Soon after the announcement from Jet, thousands of people unsuccessfully tried to book these cheap tickets at the earliest possible as the server went slow considering the sudden load generated on the Jet Airways and JetKonnect booking websites. But travel agents could manage to book tickets.

Tickets can be booked online at the airline’s websites or through travel agents.

These one-way all inclusive fares have been offered in four slabs based on the travel distance. Thus, fares up to 750 km have been priced at Rs.2,250, while that for destinations from 750 km to 1,000 km are priced at Rs.2,850.

Similarly, a ticket for destinations in the travelling distance of 1,000-1400 km costs Rs.3,300 and for distance of more than 1,400 km tickets are priced at Rs.3,800.

For instance, the one-way fares from Mumbai to Ahmedabad, Mangalore, Hyderabad, Nagpur or Bhopal would be Rs.2,250, and to Bangalore, Raipur, Coimbatore or Jaipur it would be Rs.2,850.

A ticket from Mumbai to Chandigarh, Delhi, Bhubaneswar or Visakhapatnam is priced at Rs.3,300 and to Kolkata at Rs.3,800.

Similarly, from Delhi to Jammu, Srinagar and Varanasi, the fare is Rs.2,250, to Ahmedabad, Patna or Raipur Rs.2,850, to Bangalore, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Ranchi or Pune Rs.3,300, to Chennai, Bangalore or Guwahati it is Rs.3,800, Jet Airways said.

“This nation-wide low fare sales offer is a goodwill gesture to our loyal guests. We have no doubt that these range of special fares, will offer tremendous value throughout the year. This limited inventory under the offer is subject to availability on all domestic flights,” said Sudheer Raghavan, Chief Commercial Officer, Jet Airways.

Airlines are resorting to such offers as the demand for air travel is declining due to high air fares.

The cheap fares will be for limited seats as the airlines are normally having occupancy of 70 per cent.
