Indian Bank will decide on closing some ATMs, mostly in rural locations, at night as a security measure.
The bank has examined the transactions between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. in all its 1,700 ATMs across the country, and has found that about 650 ATMs are reported to be showing zero hits during the time.
So, it is considering to keep such ATMs closed from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Of 650 such ATMs, about 300 ATMs are in Tamil Nadu.
T. M. Bhasin, Chairman & Managing Director, told The Hindu that the Bank would discuss the subject in its upcoming board meeting in early April, and would start implementing it after that.
“While the proposed partial shut down plan is in the interest of customers, it is also expected to help save on power and other costs marginally,” he added.
While banks were told to beef up security at the ATMs, Indian Banks’ Association (IBA), the apex body of banks in the country, also discussed various measures to ramp up security at the ATMs.
A leading private sector bank is reported to have already started to implement the plan of closing the ATMs at dusk.
