Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI), on Wednesday, launched the most affordable scooter in its portfolio— a 110cc Activa-I, priced at Rs. 44,200 (ex-showroom, Delhi).
The gearless scooter is being positioned in the personal compact segment, and will be available for sale across the market by the end of the month.
“As a leader in the automatic scooters segment, Honda's entry into the personal compact segment with ACTIVA-I is its next strategic step towards reinforcing its market leadership,” HMSI President and Chief Executive Officer Keita Muramatsu told reporters here on Wednesday.
Mr. Muramatsu said the company was working on developing a new two-wheeler in India that could hit the market within a year.
A joint team of about 200 engineers of the company's two arms, Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India and Honda Research & Development India, was currently working on the project, he added.
“Yes, there is work going on to produce a 100 per cent locally developed product in India," he said. However, he did not elaborate whether it would be a scooter or a motorcycle.
Manesar centre
According to HMSI Vice-President Sales and Marketing Yadvinder Singh Guleria, the work is happening at the company’s technical centre at Manesar.
Asked about the timeline of the launch of the product, he said, "Within next one year we hope to be able to show you something."
