Hindustan Construction Company (HCC), which recently built a 11-km long tunnel through the Pir Panjal mountain range, is planning to bid for another such infra project in the state. The Banihal railway tunnel, which is the longest in the country, will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday.

The Mumbai-based firm said it would bid for the 13-km long Arpinchala-Dharam project.

“The Banihal-Qazigund railway tunnel, the longest in the country, was awarded to us in 2005 by IRCON, a construction subsidiary of the Railways. The track is now ready to ply by the Indian Railways,” tunnel’s project manager Sharanappa Yalal said.

The initial cost of the tunnel project was Rs.400 crore.

However, it went up to Rs.800 crore as the scope of the project widened.

HCC has also executed 240 MW Uri-II hydro power project in the state, which is likely to be commissioned soon.

“We have done the civil construction part of the project and the project hand over is likely to happen soon,” he said.

“It is up to NHPC to decide on the date of commissioning of the project,” he added.
