Amidst steep competition from the private sector, the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas has drawn up a plan to enhance the marketing capability of Public Sector oil companies in fuel and LPG retailing and turning petrol pumps into retail hubs.
“Petrol pumps will be turned into retail destinations where multiple products will be available. These will be points of employment. This would require skill development of lakhs of people working as attendants,” said Dharmendra Pradhan, Union Minister of State for Petroleum & Natural Gas.
He was here to attend the meeting of Consultative Committee of Parliament for his ministry organised here.
Oil Companies are pursuing network expansion to ensure coverage of all significant points of consumption including the remote areas. At present there are 53,800 retail outlets in the country and estimated 32000 new retail outlets are required over the next 10 years to cater to the growing customer needs, the minister said.
To enhance the skill of the personnel working at the retail outlets, the PSU oil companies will enter into a MoU with the Ministry of Skill Development where by 5 lakh people will be trained to handle multi tasking jobs as well as to have better customer interface.
Besides, another 5 lakh people from the PSU oil sector will be provided with training said Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs and Skill Development Rajiv Pratap Rudy.
Meanwhile, the government as part of its go green initiative has decided to increase LPG penetration from 55 per cent of the households to 75 per cent in 4 years and make natural gas available in highways connecting key cities to ensure motorists have access to CNG.
