Flipkart said it has built an innovative ‘anti-theft packaging’ solution to deliver the parcels securely to customers across the country. The India’s top homegrown e-commerce firm said their unique packaging would ensure that customers do not receive stolen or damaged shipments.

“We are starting with high value products (like mobile phones) but our goal is to expand it to all the items,” said Satyam Choudhary, senior director at Flipkart in a telephone interview.

Flipkart that has a registered customer base of over 100 million plans to hold its flagship ‘Big Billion Days’ sale from 20-24 September. The innovation, which is currently awaiting patent grant, incorporates special security features in shipment, which are 100 percent tamper-proof as well as tamper-evident, said the company.

The innovation comes at a time when few e-commerce firms in the country have faced flak from consumers for delivering shipments which contained bricks, soap bars and pieces of wood instead of products such as iPhones, laptops, cameras and watches purchased online.

“The real impact we are looking is to increase the trust so that more consumers shop online,” said Mr. Choudhary.

Flipkart said that shipments wrapped in the new packaging would take substantial amount of time, resources, information and techniques to re-open and re-seal to ensure original form of shipment. Additionally, being “tamper-evident”, in case a package has been tampered with, the next supply chain person or customer can easily detect any tampering and will be subjected to no acceptance, said Mr. Choudhary.

Flipkart also said that its special boxes come with additional unique features such as, single quarter opening area, inside flap interlocking, hidden notches in the corners and seal by shipping label. The shipping label is further enabled with special security features that will forbid reprinting or duplication of label outside.
