The Central Government has drawn up plans to set up 25 new textile parks across the country, Union Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma said.
“A decision on this issue is expected to be taken in the next fortnight. We will take a final view on the new schemes for integrated textiles park (SITPs) to be established in the country,'' Mr. Sharma said here. On Friday Mr. Sharma had reviewed the working of the Textile Ministry and held a prolonged session with textile industry stakeholders including yarn and cotton traders to assess the situation.
Mr. Sharma, who holds additional charge of the Textiles Ministry, said 25 new SITPs would be constituted with each unit costing Rs.40 crore. Four integrated textile parks would be inaugurated in Maharashtra and Gujarat shortly, he added.
Seeking to revive the National Textiles Corporation (NTC), Mr. Sharma said three new mills of NTC would be opened soon in Maharashtra, Gujarat and Karnataka.
Mr. Sharma also announced that the government planned to introduce the Cotton Development Bill in the winter session of Parliament to establish a Directorate General of Textile Intelligence and to give a new thrust to the cotton sector.
