Cable&Wireless Worldwide inaugurated a new India centre of excellence here. The centre will serve as the second network operating centre (NOC) after Bangalore. Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, Mike Barnard, Director-Customer Services, said the two India centres would manage and support communication networks of over 6,500 enterprise and carrier customers across Asia, Europe and the U.S.
He said the company had already announced a $ 30 million investment in the Indian multi-service platform, which was launched in 2009 and another $ 50 million in the Europe India Gateway (EIG). EIG was a new undersea cable system providing greater network capacity between Europe and India. Slated for launch in early 2011, the 15,000 km long EIG was the first high bandwidth cable system using dense wavelength division multiplexing technology connecting the U.K. with India via the Mediterranean Sea. Mr. Barnard said consumers would increasingly use more bandwidth applications with the introduction of 3G services.
Shali Thilakan, Managing Director (India), said the Chennai facility, spread over a 15,000 sq ft., was capable of holding up to 300 employees. The Bangalore centre supported major international customers such as HSBC, Citibank to name a few.
