The Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR), NTPC and Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited have signed a memorandum of understanding for the development of an advanced ultra super critical technology to be used for coal-fired power plants. Disclosing this at a press conference here on Saturday, Baldev Raj, Director of the IGCAR, said the technology would be ready by 2017. The MoU was signed in New Delhi late last month.

Giving details of the three-day international conference to be organised by the IGCAR and the Indian Nuclear Society in Mamallapuram from October 11 to 13, Dr. Raj said about 250 delegates, including 60 from foreign countries, would be taking part in the meet. Safety issues would, among others, be discussed.

Stating that this would be the second such meet, he said the first conference was held in Japan two years ago. The broad theme of the conference next month was Asian Nuclear Prospects. S. Banerjee, Atomic Energy Commission Chairman and Atomic Energy Department Secretary, would inaugurate the meet.

The International Atomic Energy Agency would send three specialists to the meet.
