June 18, 2013 11:31 pm | Updated 11:38 pm IST - NEW DELHI:

The Union Coal Ministry, on Tuesday, issued show cause notices to six corporate houses, including Jindal Steel and Power Limited (JSPL), Tata Power, Monnet Ispat and Jindal Photo, for their failure to develop the allocated coal mines in the stipulated period.

The companies have been given 20 days time to explain the reasons for the delay in executing development work at the coal mines failing which they will face the threat of de-allocation. “Why the delay in the development of the coal block should not be held as violation of the terms and conditions and action as appropriate would be taken against you for de-allocation,” the show cause notice read. The latest crackdown is part of the government’s exercise to ensure that allocated blocks do not remain unproductive.

Badam coal block in Jharkhand alloted to Tenughat Vidyut Nigam Ltd. in 2003 and Suliyari block in Madhya Pradesh allotted to Andhra Mineral Development Corporation in 2007 are the others for which notices have been issued.
