Renowned economist Jagdish Bhagwati on Wednesday said that the government should spearhead reforms to ensure healthy economic future of the country.

“Intensify first set of reforms and enable the second stage of reforms,” said Prof. Bhagwati, while addressing a press conference here as part of Exim Bank commencement day annual lecture, on ‘Developments in the world trading system: India’s options’.

He said that areas such as health and education were crucial in the second stage of reforms. According to him while traditional growth oriented reforms are undertaken by the government, reforms in sectors such as retail is also crucial as this will have so many other impacts like better products will be available to consumer at better prices.

Prof. Bhagwati said that opening up of the retail sector would also help Indian farmers as they would get better prices for their produce.
