Amid reports of exports picking up, the Centre on Tuesday said it would decide on sops to exporters, still hit by falling demand, only after the completion of the ongoing performance review.
“Sectoral reviews are on and they should be completed soon... A decision on incentives to exporters impacted by the falling demand will be taken only after the review is completed,” Union Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma told journalists here.
Extra incentives
Some labour intensive export sectors (including engineering goods and textiles), which have been badly impacted by global economic slowdown, are demanding extra incentives from the government to revive their respective sectors. The Ministry is now studying the impact of the stimulus packages like interest subsidy and incentives to explore new markets, provided by the government to exporters.
Referring to revival of the exports sector, Mr. Sharma said it would turn positive from early next year (2010). “Hopefully, we are moving in the positive territory by the final quarter of the current fiscal. The contraction in exports has narrowed down, but shipments in segments like apparels and handicrafts are yet to pick up,” he added.
Meanwhile, the latest government data show the export sector reported an impressive recovery in November after registering falls for 13 consecutive months due to economic slowdown. In November, exports posted a growth of 18 per cent to touch $13.2 billion. Among the sectors that performed good during the month included gems and jewellery, readymade garments, man-made fibres and petroleum products.
