Cabinet Secretary K.M. Chandrasekhar will head a high-level committee to monitor vacation of spectrum by Defence forces for the launch of 3G mobile services by telecom operators. Secretaries of Defence, Telecom and Expenditure departments will be its members.

After Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee-headed empowered-Group of Ministers (e-GOM) finalised the reserve price for the auction of 3G spectrum a couple of weeks ago, Union Communications and Information Technology Minister A. Raja had announced auction of 3G spectrum in next three months.

To expedite the nationwide launch of 3G mobile services, the Defence ministry has agreed to vacate radio waves. The Chandrasekhar committee will now ensure smooth vacation of radio waves by the defence forces. It will also monitor the setting up of a dedicated optic fibre cable network for the use of armed forces.
