WHEN: My time of writing is not fixed. I don’t compartmentalise my life into things I do. Whenever I think of something and if I get some ideas I write. There is a constant ferment of ideas inside me- when they bubble over I start writing. This can happen any time.

HOW: I still use an ink pen and resist using ball-point pens for my stories. Earlier we used to dip the feather or pen into an inkpot. I also write a weekly column and for that I use newsprint, so I have to write with a ballpoint pen since newsprint smudges with an ink pen. You don’t get fountain pens now, it’s so difficult. I have always written my work by hand and forgot my typing though I did learn it once.

WHERE: My bedroom is my study and also all my books are there. I have a table and a chair and I prefer sitting down and writing in the same place.

WHAT: I don’t determine what I want to write. Usually my stories are nonpolitical and they reflect a cultural dimension of the past. My main interest is linking the past with the present and I feel they can’t be separated. But of late I find I am giving sermons, especially on the anniversaries of people. I write my column regularly but will get back to writing some stories.
