Brinda Karat is a former member of the Rajya Sabha and a member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) Politburo. From 1993-2004, she was the general secretary of the All India Democratic Women's Association, the largest women's organization in India, and has also served as the Association's Vice President. She has also worked with trade unions, serving as a secretary in the Textile Workers Union in Delhi and also among workers in the unorganized sector. Currently, she is a member of the Central Executive of the Adivasi Adhikar Rashtriya Manch. Her book, "Survival and Emancipation: Notes from Indian Women's Struggles" (Three Essays Collective) examines women's movements in India from a left perspective.
Brinda Karat will participate in a panel discussion — Accidental India: An Economic History of Modern India — in Delhi on February 6, 2013, on the economic history of modern India with Bibek Debroy, Shankkar Aiyar and Jayanthi Natarajan. Siddharth Varadarajan will moderate the discussion.
