The phrase ‘reality show,' throws up an image of a television programme TV program that features people and has arts, literature, or journalism as its theme. Not anymore. really! The ACV has a reality show that features homes and aims at to zeroing in on the ‘best home in Kerala.' Jayan Sasthamangalam, director of the programme, speaks about ‘Ente Veedu.'
The concept
The concept is unique when compared to other reality shows that are rampant on television. The camera goes to 60 select homes across Kerala to select the ‘best home,' which combines several aspects of good living. The concept was first tried on a smaller scale a while ago on ACV's sister channel Rosebowl, in its popular ‘Dream Home' programme.
What's special?
Good living does not necessarily mean a ‘posh home.' We have added some dimensions to the concept of ‘Dream Home' in ‘Ente Veedu.' The homes that are featured in ‘Ente Veedu' are assessed on three parameters: functional aspect, interiors and exteriors, including eco-friendly aspects of the house. Marks are allotted to each house.
The judges
A panel of three judges evaluate the homes featured. Architects G. Shankar and Shyna Rajesh are the permanent judges. The third judge is usually a celebrity or a home-maker with some aesthetic sense.
Feedback
The feedback from viewers has been heartening. Those who are planning to build their homes say that this programme has proved to be an excellent guide. Both laymen and architects have been known to pick up ideas from the programme.
Moments to remember
It's been an unforgettable journey and we have travelled across Kerala looking at a wide range of homes. Each of the 60 houses is unique and requires special mention. There was a home at Pottamkulam in Idukki District that had a brook flowing near it, and the owner has innovatively made it a part of his home. There are houses that have incorporated innovative use of glass, steel, or wood and effectively managed cost and eco-friendly factors.
