Hungry is popular on the college circuit, and not just because it has a name that perhaps best describes the typical college student. The three-year-old band’s straightforward alt-rock sound, coupled with earnest – and sometimes tongue-in-cheek – lyrics have won them plenty of loyal listeners.
Unlike most bands consisting of college students, Hungry wasn’t formed to represent a college for some fest. Instead, three friends got together in November 2009 to play music. Three years and several gigs around the country later, band members are set to graduate from their engineering colleges, and are confident they’ll be able to juggle their onstage and cubicle lives.
Hungry began
As a three-man acoustic line-up. They felt the need to explore their electric tendencies as well, and so a drummer was a step in that direction, says lead singer Sonal Chittiappa.
They’re influenced by
Pearl Jam, Dave Matthews Band, Incubus, Mayfield Four. “Plus a whole lot of other obscure bands,” says Sonal.
Listen for
Soaring, powerful vocals backed by standard-issue rock riffs, and lyrics that perhaps speak loudest to the college experience – love, heartbreak, and so on. We particularly dig ‘Shining High’, an early acoustic original.
Look forward to
An album of originals, sometime in the future: Sonal says that it’ll be when they hit fifteen originals (he estimates it’ll take a year).
Hungry are
Sonal Chittiappa on vocals, Mahesh Kumar on drums, Arun Ranganatha on guitars, Vishwesh Raghu on rhythm guitars, and Prem Kumar on bass guitar.
