One is a renowned child prodigy whose chitraveena obliges his every wish. The other is a santoor virtuoso known for his unique playing technique. When the duo gets together, you're assured of magical moments. And when the accompanists are the incredibly talented Trichy Shankaran (mridangam), Abhijit Banerjee (tabla) and Akkarai Subhalakshmi (violin), you're in for an evening of scintillating music.
This was the fourth concert at Yaksha, organised by the Isha Yoga Foundation at the foothills of the panoramic Velliangiri hills.
N. Ravikiran started off by explaining the significance and playing techniques of the instruments featured. “I've performed quite a few times with Tarunji and it's a refreshing experience every time,” he said. The evening began with a specially-composed Raagam Thaanam Pallavi in Keeravani featuring the two main instruments. At once sprightly and meditative, the artistes carried you along into the world of musical strings. A while later, they moved on to Paratpara Maheshwara Dayakara in Adi Tala for the pallavi. The concert concluded with a short piece in Hamsadhwani.
Akkarai Subhalakshmi's flourishes on the violin met with resounding claps. And, Trichy Shankaran and Abhijit Banerjee had a great thing going on stage, competing with and encouraging each other at every step.
