The legendary Kashmiri shawl and the intricate filigree work of Rajasthani ‘thewa’ jewellery represent facets of the country’s rich craft tradition. On view at two separate exhibitions currently on in the city, the shawls and the jewellery lend lustre to Christmas and New Year gift shopping.
The Central Cottage Industries Emporium’s ‘Kashmiri Crafts’ display showcases Pashminas in many colours embroidered with paisleys and flowers, or dense ‘rezabuta’, or with exquisite borders. The Kani shawl too is a show-stealer, embellished with ari and crewel work. Jamewars with huge amris, and floral embroidery, off-white ari-embroidered woollen shawls and reversible Pashminas are other draws at the exhibition which also features papier-mâché boxes and vases.
Mrignayanee’s mini exhibition showcases filigree ‘thewa’ jewellery crafted out of 24-carat gold leaf pressed on coloured glass. The jhumkas, necklaces and pendants are encrusted with rubies and diamonds and have fine minakari work.
Mrignayanee’s collection of Chanderi and Maheshwari saris has been especially created for the festive days ahead. The off-white Chanderis with huge woven gold motifs and extravagant borders are eye-catching, amid a varied collection of jewel toned buttidar saris. The Maheshwaris too come in a range of colours with eclectic borders and striking formats with smart stripes and ethereal ‘ghicha’ pallus.
‘Kashmir Crafts’ is on view at CCIE, Temple Towers, Nandanam, 672, Anna Salai, till December 21. Mrignanyanee’s Mini Exhibition, which is on at TNHB complex, 180, Luz Church Road, Alwarpet, concludes on December 24.
