Glittering emeralds from Columbia and Zambia, sparkling rubies from Burma and Sri Lanka, blemishless pearls from Basra, Iraq… and many more precious and semi-precious stones are on display at an exhibition-cum-sale of Tamil Nadu Handicrafts Development Corporation at Poompuhar showroom. From loose birth stones to exquisitely designed chains and rings, the rare collection from all over the world boasts of a wide variety to attract people.

“Original precious stones have the power to alter your fortune. Each stone has its unique feature and derives energy from the planet it is associated with,” says gemmologist and artisan from Mahabalipuram, V. Somasuntharam.

“Natural or genuine pearl is rarity. Generally, the synthetic or culture pearls are seen more at exhibitions. It takes years for natural pearl to form and hence they are expensive. Pearl also has the potential to cure insomnia and strengthens mind force,” he explains.

Precious and semi precious stones in different shapes and sizes priced from Rs.50 to whopping Rs.100,000 are on display at the 11-day exhibition.

In addition, chains made of coral stones from Italy and Taiwan, yellow and blue sapphires from Bangkok and quartz from Brazil and Mexico are the other attractions.

“Usually exhibitions of semi-precious stones are an annual affair. But this time, we have brought precious stones. Artisans from Mahabalipuram, Coimbatore, Tirunelveli and Paramakudi are participating in this exhibition along with local artisans. Apart from the stones, we also have Japan gold- painted pearl haram and earring set,” shares showroom manager V. Ganesan.

Besides, there are also semi precious loose stones such as garnet, onyx, opal, jade, labradorite, aventurine, agate, amethyst, aquamarine, bloodstone, lapis lazuli, malachite, moonstone, quartz, peridot, jasper, sun stone, tiger eye, topaz, tourmaline, turquoise, smoky topaz and carmelian.

“We have not displayed diamonds as it does not suit everybody. We have got only American diamonds,” informs Mr.Somasuntharam, adding all precious stones are certified by qualified gemmologists. .

There is also one gram gold jewellery that includes bangles, earrings, anklets and chains.

The showroom is open (excluding Sundays) from 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. to 8 p.m.
