It is that time of the year when brightly-painted Krishnas, Ramas, Gandhis and Tagores get ready to adorn homes. With Navarathri a little over a month away, kolu dolls from different parts of the country are making their way into the city arts and crafts market.
One such exhibition-cum-sale of dolls was inaugurated by Khadi Minister K. Ramachandran at the Khadicraft showroom in Kuralagam here on Friday.
The highlight of this year's collection, which features dolls priced in the range Rs.10-20,000, is the section featuring dolls made of marble and fibre. A range of colourful Radhakrishna dolls in different colourful combinations kept in this stall showcasing dolls from Jaipur, seem interesting. These dolls could be washed and cleaned, said the salesman in-charge of the counter.
Other new dolls include Lord Krishna and Kuchelar, Saint Thyagaraja worshipping Lord Rama, the birth of Iyappan (Manikandan Jananam), Kal Garudan and the Kalahasti set.
The dolls have been sourced from Puducherry, Karnataka, Andhra, Kolkata, Kancheepuram, Panruti, Kumbakonam and Kanyakumari, the organisers said. The exhibition is on till October 25 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. From September 12, the exhibition will open on Sundays, too.
