Lakkaram Tank, a neglected beauty

Once a tourist attraction and irrigation tank, Lakkaram Lake in Khammam dug up during the reign of the Kakatiyas, has ceased to serve both farmers and tourists. Tank is spread over 120 acres. The storage area has shrunk drastically from 160 acres due to encroachment on its bed due to the real estate boom in the last decade and it does not irrigate any land. Of the six tourism projects initiated by the then government in the year 2000 under PPP mode in and around the tank, only four projects had come up and the remaining two, including a multiplex, did not take off. Even those completed are not maintained properly. The boats for the water sports project are lying idle. The unchecked discharge of sewage into the tank and the dense growth of weeds renders the water body inhospitable for aquatic species. The Hindu photographer G.N.
