Ernakulam begins in style

Tiruvalla: Defending champion Ernakulam started its campaign in style with a 36-20 win over Kollam in a pool ‘A’ match of the men’s section in the State senior basketball championships at the Public Stadium courts on Tuesday.

The towering Subash J. Shenoy led the way for the champion side by scoring 11 points. R. Manoj complimented Subash well by netting 10 points.

Last year’s runner-up Thiruvananthapuram, too, warmed up for the tougher matches ahead with a comprehensive 41-8 win over Thrissur in a pool ‘B’ match.

Host Pathanamthitta had it easy against Alappuzha, winning 50-28 in another pool ‘B’ match.

In the women’s section, host Pathanamthitta defeated Alappuzha 29-12 in pool ‘A’ match. Malappuram gave Kozhikode a run for its money before losing 55-61 in one of the better contested matches of the day.

Men: Pool ‘A’: Ernakulam 36 (Subash J. Shenoy 11, R. Manoj 10) bt Kannur 20.

Pool ‘B’: Thiruvananthapuram 41 (V.G. Ajith 12, Vijobi Vakkachan 10) bt Thrissur 8; Pathanamthitta 50 (Ajeesh Sugunan 13, Albin Baby 12) bt Alappuzha 28 (D. Mukesh 14).
